凯丽（蓓尔·保利 Bel Powley 饰）是名声大噪的天才少女，18岁便获得了哈佛大学的毕业证书。虽然每个人都觉得凯丽拥有着前途无量的未来，但对于凯丽来说，每一天她都生活在郁闷和沮丧之中。凯丽的母亲自幼就离开了她，如今，相依为命的父亲派尔必（加布里埃尔·伯恩 Gabriel Byrne 饰）竟然也决定组建新的家庭。察觉到了凯丽的彷徨，父亲将名为佩特罗夫（内森·连恩 Nathan Lane 饰）的心理医生介绍给了凯丽，佩特罗夫给了凯丽一份清单，上面罗列着六项任务，佩特罗夫向凯丽保证，只要她完成了这两项任务，就能够重新找回快乐，一切真的如他所说的那么简单吗？
