Black Bag is a tremendous example that a film need not be making an explicit political point or obsessed with the political dimensions of its narrative to be worthwhile cinema. A work can rise to this present moment by offering us rapture. This, too, is what movies are meant to accomplish.

The result is absolutely delicious, a svelte piece of entertainment that feels like a vintage yarn yet very much represents our own current anxieties, questions of sustaining trust in relationships and high-stake careers.

Soderbergh and Koepp, for their part, express their own fervent belief: in the seductive glamour of espionage and the magnetism of Blanchett’s and Fassbender’s interlocking gazes—which is to say, in the enveloping artifice and power of movies. Great is their faithfulness indeed.

Taut yet thoroughly laced with levity, Black Bag plays like the filmic equivalent of a skillfully executed espionage mission in how tight and exact it feels.

There are not many films on the release schedule with good writing and plotting, wit and solid acting. That’s an exceptional combination in a quick bite of the spy movie genre.

Black Bag may be rooted in the mind, but it is inextricably connected to the heart, especially in matters of love and trust, betrayal and murder. That’s what makes a Soderbergh genre exercise such a deliciously satisfying cinematic morsel: It is pure fun, but also deeply layered with larger existential themes, making for a delightful romantic spy drama that cannot be missed.

When it comes to sleek, stylish genre movies, Soderbergh remains a maestro at the top of his game.

Seeing how Soderbergh and Koepp can expertly stack the deck to always be one step before the viewer is an exhilarating thrill to behold.

Black Bag is a reminder of just how enjoyable Soderbergh can be when he’s riffing on well-worn genre material.

While the supporting cast are impeccable across the board, it’s really Blanchett and Fassbender’s film to command, with performances that drip with old-school star power.

This is a difficult one to review. Without getting into specifics, it kind of felt like... a movie trying to be more intelligent than it actually was. Could've been one of the spy movie greats, but sadly wasn't. Sadly Soderbergh has done much better.

A nice, slow burner. Some of the clichés used at the start of the movie did turn me off a little bit, but the two plots running in tandem in a coherent way was refreshing.

Fascinating dialogue, superb acting across the board (What Abela and Fassbender in particular delivered in their dialogues was pure joy to watch) and a charming little story. I wish it had been twice as long.

Even losing myself a little bit on the middle of the movie thanks to it' complex intrigue and interactions between characters, i apreciated a lot of it. The cast is awesome, as the cinematography of Soderbergh makes everything a little cooler, and the plot always going back to the marriage situation of the protagonists was great as well. European thriller at it's finest.

An intriguing whodunit with a decent storyline, and some decent acting. Very stylised in both its direction and score, it kept me watching to the end. Ultimately though it left me feeling that it could have been a while lot better! The ending was also poor, which is a theme with Soderbergh. I'd watch it again though.

Black Bag operates like a true spy film—quietly, efficiently, and without unnecessary spectacle. It sets its plot in motion from the very first frame and steadily raises the stakes, not through dramatic reveals but through a slow, methodical unraveling of secrets. This is espionage cinema that doesn't scream for attention but commands it with calm precision. The characters are refreshingly grounded, each spy shaped by their own distinct personality rather than exaggerated archetypes. Their low-profile approach to high-stakes situations feels authentic, giving the film a lived-in, believable edge. Visually and tonally, the film stays consistent throughout. The direction is crisp and tightly woven, never flashy but always intentional—like the work of a seasoned operative. The muted style adds to the mood, allowing the psychological and moral complexities to quietly simmer beneath the surface. There may not be big fireworks or emotional crescendos, but Black Bag doesn’t need them. It thrives on control, subtlety, and a deep understanding of the genre it plays in. A quietly compelling entry into modern spy thrillers.

It's all very well put together, but in the end, it's just boring. The movie never achieves the real suspense it's looking for. The soundtrack is weird, especially in some moments like the first lake scene. It tries too hard to have comedic moments, well you would expect so, from a Steven Soderbergh movie, we have all seen before. All of those plot twists are essentially annoying, literally eye rolling to a point where you just let the movie roll without any anticipation, lacking drama. There's just too much dialogue, and also just too much dirty talk to make the movie look "adult". Even the acting, that you would expect to be really good, given the actors talent, but it is blunt, full of hard faces and all of those hard polish smart suits, just to make room for all that talking.

Black Bag is yet another very well funded, well acted, and well produced, but utterly boring film. I've read the reviews that call it 'adult', or 'grown up', and apparently refreshingly so in that regard. Maybe if you are under 35 and only have imaginings of what any of that actually means or translates to. This does not hold up to scrutiny or viewing; I found all of the characters smug and unlikeable, and if we are at a point when the protagonists are considered to be 'adult' simply because they are not as deviant or laissez-faire as their even more shallow compatriots - sheesh. Anyone over 40 is going to find this representation of 'adulthood' absurd, that it's also a boring script does not help matters. That said, the base plot could have been penned by an algorithm,, and though I get the interplay of the themes of betrayal and trust; they just aren't presented well or compellingly; this is a caricature of 'adulthood', and a sure as heck boring 'spy' movie watching the characters very bizarrely get to the conclusion. As with so many films these days, performances are good, production is good, but the bones, the story - are we farming scriptwriting to junior high schools at this point? Because in its larger themes, this movie is that juvenile. Deep as a bottle cap. Skip it.

A partnership worth preserving. Soderbergh and Koepp combine again to creat another soulful, quiet thriller worth of both industry giants' enormous blockbusting filmography. We can only hope that the two mega-egos handle the lower box office numbers long enough to produce some more memorable entries.

Greetings from Lithuania. "Black Bag" (2025) is a spy thriller drama directed by Steven Soderbergh. I won't spoil the plot or any details, but will say that i did enjoy it for the most part of it. At its running time 1 h 25 min this is a surprisingly short film, but i wasn't mind because if it would stretched to some 2 h 20 min that would have been a drag - many movies now seems to do that. I liked the acting in "Black Bag" the most. Veterans Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett are excellent here and fresh faces like Tom Burke ("Furiosa"), Marisa Abela are very good in here. The plot was intriguing and i liked that it was approached not in a conventional way but rather through characters. Overall, "Black Bag" is not a typical spy film, as it leans heavy into characters and their motivations and interaction with each other. It kept me guessing and mildly involved. A pretty good if not a great film.

Yet another well made film inspired by Mr. and Mrs. Smith about married agents who are pitted against one another. This one revolves around a British spy couple, and includes many solid actors in supporting roles.

Até que enfim a Cate Blanchet voltou a fazer filme bom, daqueles que você precisa ficar com os olhos e ouvidosbem atentos para não perder o fio da meada e os detalhes da investigação. É claustrofóbico e divertido, com um roteiro que aparenta ser confuso, mas cujas peças vão se encaixando. Claro que ainda há aqui aquela velha manipulação de considerar tudo muito suscetível à narrativa, mas ainda assim é um filme que diverte.

(Mauro Lanari) A "Carnage" that Soderbergh couldn't help but rework in a way antithetical to Polanski: so shouted and coarse the former, as aseptic and controlled as usual the American director, this time also facilitated by the British Hitchcòckian context. For 35 years, he has dedicated half of his filmography to the theme of lies, perhaps this time adding an analysis of the couple's relationship, a Bergmanian "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." A dark, sophisticated comedy in which the director and cast throw themselves into the impossible mission of communicating their extremely elegant, sober, restrained, impassive, stifled amusement, but due to the lack of empathy, the outcome is predictably glacial. Blanchett's botox accentuates the inexpressiveness, and in the meanwhile, the format has even been adopted in Italy by Genovesi. Box-office megaflop: comforting news.

A stacked cast doesn't overcome a painfully boring story and a padded runtime despite clocking in around 90 minutes. They easily could have cut another 10-15 minutes out of this film without issue, and it shows. The story is so bare bones that even stretching it out to 90 minutes was a challenge. There's no depth, and it is so hard to get behind any of the characters when they're so plain and unlikable.

I really enjoyed the film. A clever and exciting story, clever use of CGI, but perhaps a bit too short.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, Steven Soderbergh is the most overrated director in Hollywood. Black Bag is a spy thriller in very poor fashion with flat direction, poor cinematography, and a very mediocre script. The establishes a solid exposition that goes down the drain after 20 minutes. I will give props to the last 30 minutes of the movie which do overtime to save the movie in the smallest ways. The story goes from a hit on a rat to saving the world from WW3. This is just ridiculous. For a spy thriller centered on marriage, this movie lacks that connection between the main two leads, and it’s not the fault of the actors or their chemistry. This movie is a misfire on all cylinders and is very unenjoyable.

Moves along very smoothly and smartly for a spy thriller and is shot and lit in really inventive ways.

Very "tight" script and flawlessly executed with not a moment wasted. This is filler.

I didn't find anything about this movie that special or worth while. While the interactions between the characters were entertaining, it doesn't stand out to me in the world of spy movies as something "great." Average if anything, and not worth seeing in theaters.

It's a very good, very well made movie. In general the younger you are, and the more explosions you expect, the less you'll enjoy it. Spy whodunit featuring a sexy 50ish year old couple. (Fassbender and Blanchet are still very attractive, don't scoff)
