Overall, The Serpent Queen Season 2 is a continuation of everything the show did so well in Season 1. Letting Samantha Morton do what she does best, the series continues the extraordinary story of its larger-than-life central character with conviction, bravado, and pitch-black, relentless humor that never outstays its welcome.

Catherine de Medici sent to the French court at 14, where she was married and eventually managed to rule for 30 years. She's played by Samantha Morton, who commands the screen in every scene. This series details her rise, her family and her notoriety with delicious treachery. The show abounds with political intrigue and personal challenges. The cast is uniformly wonderful with interesting characters and the direction keeps it involving. The costumes are always lovely and the surroundings elegant. The second season has just started, which expands the story to England where Minnie Driver is Queen Elizabeth. Historical dramas come along regularly and this one is juicier than many. (Eight one-hour eps in Season One with 4 released in Season Two)

Although The Serpent Queen Season 2 may take its sweet time setting its many political pieces into place, the series relentlessly builds to a crescendo that’s bloody, shocking, and full of the sort of unrepentant scheming and betrayal that the name Catherine de Medici is (rightly or wrongly) famous for.
