The battle between the good and the bad is about to get ugly.

In a small Minnesota town, the annual beauty pageant is being covered by a TV crew. Former winner Gladys Leeman wants to make sure her daughter follows in her footsteps; explosions, falling lights, and trailer fires prove that. As the Leemans are the richest family in town, the police are pretty relaxed about it all. Despite everything, main rival (but sweet) Amber Atkins won't give up without a fight.

Occasionally heavy-handed and overdone -- and scarcely free from a self-congratulatory tone -- this latest spoof is nonetheless lots of fun, clever and fearless, and loaded with wicked lines and touches.

Drop Dead Gorgeous delivers a stand-out cast in this satirical dark comedy. While the visuals put you into the decade, it was filmed; that's part of its charm. Drop Dead Gorgeous reveals themes such as the commodity for youth and selling one type of beauty to the world. It also explores class differences when comparing Kristen Dunst's and Dennis Richards' characters. It may mask itself well as a "twisted comedy." Still, it is also a social commentary on how single mothers and their children tend to need more support (financially and physically), how these children often feel trapped by their circumstances due to cyclical poverty, and how sometimes they'll do just about anything to escape what those children (Kristen Dunst's character in this film) see as their future. This film isn't getting a higher score because it uses the R-Slur, and even in the 1990s, it wasn't okay and saneist/ableist. That said, I suggest this film to anyone who enjoys these actors, as well as satirical and dark comedic films that will still allow you to think critically.

Although the satire is biting and the tone is irreverent, Drop Dead Gorgeous lacks the killer script and top notch performances necessary to make this a wholly successful production.
