When French criminal Corey gets released from prison, he resolves to never return. He is quickly pulled back into the underworld, however, after a chance encounter with escaped murderer Vogel. Along with former policeman and current alcoholic Jansen, they plot an intricate jewel heist. All the while, quirky Police Commissioner Mattei, who was the one to lose custody of Vogel, is determined to find him.

偷盗电影《红圈》里最不重要的就是中间这段偷盗戏。它尽管在复杂程度上丝毫不亚于Rififi，却完全不是故事的核心，就连偷盗的准备都几乎是自然而然发生的。梅尔维尔的重点在于里面所有人物间的关系，这个世界里的义气和背叛都是在六十年代早已过时的。因此这个故事的核心人物是退伍的警察，他与探长间形成了一对镜像关系，点明着“老无所依”的主题。梅尔维尔最擅长的是加入看似的闲笔，探长的两场逗猫戏的剧情张力爆棚。
这是一个寻找与丧失的故事，每个人都在陡峭沦丧的世界中寻找一线生机，是这场不择手段的狩猎游戏的牺牲品。没有真正的犯罪、正义或英雄主义，没有激情，就连愤怒也常常哑火。他们都面临着被抛弃与被遗忘，他们死于法官眼中无情有罪的世界
神片一枚！归入年度最佳之一。梅尔维尔极擅长用默片手法和极致纯粹的场面调度构建城市迷宫，人物永远在行动中，所以一点不会觉得闷。这部更是与布列松的扒手近似，对犯罪手法的熟悉程度让人瞠目。最后提到“每个人都有罪”，警察也不例外，是法律之外的道德审判。神枪手竟然一段还附带了精神分析！
