To keep serious cinema from going extinct, this could be sold as "The Hunger Games" cross-bred with "The Lorax," but it's better and more mature than either of those hit movies.

A good thriller that is completely elevated by an exceptional performance from Willem Dafoe as a mercenary hunting down a rare, extinct species. The cinematography of the rugged landscape is stunning. However, the film struggles with a disjointed buildup. At times, it feels like a slow family drama, while at other times, it shifts into a gritty revenge vibe. The twists are solid and heartbreaking, though a few feel unnecessary to the core plot. Additionally, the villains are poorly developed with weak motives, leaving you confused about their actual goals. The ending is good and emotionally heavy, but it happens entirely too fast compared to the rest of the movie. Overall, a good watch, but it misses being great due to an uneven screenplay.

The Hunter works best as a travelogue and a thought-piece about the ugly, shadowy side of resurrecting dead species.
