The Invitation (2022)

The Invitation represents everything that makes for a middle-of-the-road vampire experience, but doesn’t deserve to be wholly written off.

Often too slick and too posh for its own good, there’s nothing really enjoyable about The Invitation. It’s technically fine, but fine is not want you want from your lusty vampire genre. There’s no glitz or glamour to set it apart from the pack, and that’s ultimately its demise.

The pace picks up when the slashing finally begins in the third act, but it’s too little, too late to get the blood going.

I want to see more from Jessica M. Thompson, who has an eye for atmospheric creepiness that would be better served with stronger material. And I want Nathalie Emmanuel to land a lead role worthy of her talents. As for The Invitation, there's not much to sink your fangs into.

Emmanuel makes for an empathetic audience stand-in and charming heroine; it’s easy to see how she’s pivoted from thankless Game Of Thrones and Fast And Furious roles to leading lady status. If The Invitation proves nothing else, it’s that she belongs at the top of the call sheet.

Though The Invitation doesn’t land in the “worst of the year” territory given its lead performance and notable flares of style, it’s neither particularly scary, nor sexy enough or as intellectually progressive as it wants to be.

The Invitation aims high, and while it's regularly impressive on a visual and aesthetic level, the storytelling lets the Gothic horror down in the end.

The predictability of events during the film’s first hour of gothic-thriller setup is all the more annoying because of the plodding pace. Evie finally stands up for herself during some modestly clever third-act turnabouts, but, really, that’s not quite enough to regenerate a rooting interest in the character.

The Invitation offers an inventive reimagining of a literary classic while asserting itself as a fun addition to the modern Gothic canon.

The Invitation takes way too long getting to its most interesting ideas, leaving us with the distinct feeling of “too little, too late.”

Nathalie Emmanuel is pretty but that doesn't carry a movie. Not in this century. I stopped after one hour of literally nothing happening. I'm not counting the maids getting killed (i assume, this being labelled as horror, coz screen was completely black). There's probably a bit of action at the end, but i'm not interested at this point. Cr@p, don't waste ur time

Yeah the setup and plot is pretty brilliant. i saw the film because of Nathalie who I found quite impressive in previous work she's done. She doesn't disappoint and carries the film but the acting performances all round are very good. Overall worth watching if you like the premise, perhaps they could do a reboot with the same plot.

I wouldn't be surprised if the script for this garbage was copy-pasted from wattpad.

A week horror film, where you can see the twist coming a mile off. It's not really scary. No jump scares, gore or anything grotesque, so safe to watch with those who don't like horror films. As a vampire film it's week and follows the classical troupes right until the end. Unfortunately it manages to get worse at the end where Evie just girlbosses her way out of the situation and even manages to somehow overpower the head vampire. It says something that Morbius was a better vampire film and made more sense!

Starring in New York, single black woman who is strong and independent and has a independent strong black female friend, then she takes a DNA test through a website and finds out that she is part noble. After that, the black strong independent woman meets her relative in New York and after that flies to London and asserts herself as a black independent woman among the evil evil white, especially white men, yes, and of course she is warned by a white woman and kills the evil evil incredibly handsome and well built white man. And she ends up with her independent black female friend from New York chasing the bad relative in London who is a bad bad white man and want to beat the s**t out of him with a baseball bat together with her independent black female friend because she was screwed. Have rarely seen such a moronic misandry film, horrible! What a garbage!

Had the potential to be epic. The Invitation tells the story of Evie(Nathalie Emmanuel). Evie finds herself in the midst of a perfect fairytale. However, she realizes that there is something sinister, underneath the squeaky clean surface. The Invitation is a great film. Director Jessica M. Thompson has given us a unique movie in the horror genre. It starts off a tad bit slow but, the movie picks up in the second half. The jump scares might work for someone who hasn't watched a single horror film. The plot is quite predictable but, the climax is bonkers and no one can guess what's going to happen next. The performances are the highlight of the movie. Nathalie Emmanuel is spectacular as Evie. I'd love to see Emmanuel headline more films & not just play supporting roles. Thomas Doherty is outstanding as De Ville. Sean Pertwee is fantastic as Renfield. Hugh Skinner is good as Oliver. Carol Ann Crawford is perfect as Mrs. Swift. Alana Boden is excellent as Lucy. Stephanie Corneliussen is phenomenal as Viktoria. The supporting cast is good. The Invitation is worth a watch for horror movie fans & Nathalie Emmanuel fans. Just lower your expectations, a tad bit.

Horror movie of 2022. The shortest comment for the movie might be Muslum Gurses' song "How it started, look how it ended". The subject is already familiar. There is an orphaned and poor girl. This girl sends blood to a gene and relatives center and finds that she has very wealthy relatives in England. One of these people invites the girl to a wedding at the castle in England. Well, men are not normal. Although the movie is really a familiar theme, it starts and progresses well. It arouses curiosity. But towards the end it takes flight and turns into disappointment in my opinion. I find the IMDB rating high. There are no nudity or sexually explicit scenes in the movie.

A struggling artist, played by Nathalie Emmanuel, takes a DNA test that was stolen from a party by her racist black friend. To her surprise, she has rich relatives in England and flies out to meet them. After 80 minutes of white people bashing and the main character accidentally breaking things, you find out it's a family of vampires, which is in the movie's trailer. The last 4 minutes of this movie contains all of the action, where the main character tips over a candle and there's some shoving. It's like bad soap opera fighting. I'm not sure who this movie is for, but it **** more than blood.

The Invitation was a fun and entertaining movie though for a horror thriller movie with romance undertones there wasn't anything really scary and little romance; I will praise them for there attempt at social commentary on race, class, and social status but it just ended up feeling like an after thought that was mostly breezed over. Nathalie Emmanuel was the saving grace of the movie giving a excellent performance. Overall just good fun movie.

The Invitation is a very bland, painfully long movie with a plot that offers next to nothing until a last-minute twist, which does nothing but makes you wish you had turned this off well in advance to avoid wasting any more of your time on it.

This movie is definitely not movie theater worthy, when going to a movie theatre you go and expect to see a movie that would have an everlasting effect on your personality. I hate to sound like harry styles here but this does not feel like a movie more so something you would find on HBOMAX on your downtime to watch because you finished everything on your HBOMAX watch list. The only reason why I continued on is to see more of Thomas Doherty's lovely face to be painfully honest.

Little disappointing. I liked the setup and was invested in for a while. The movie is a very very slow burn but I am okay with that, but the time the "big reveal" happens the movie is practically over. Unfortunately that reveal was spoiled in the trailer and it didn't get enough time to savor. Overall the performances were fine, story was fine, and just in general it's just the definition of average.

Another clear case of a film's trailer almost completely tanking its watchability. In portraying the "Crimson Peak" meets "Ready Or Not" angle on a little too thick, "The Invitation's" marketing ultimately forces its biggest twist out into the light of day. Turns out that the twist in question occurs a little bit later in the film than you would think, rendering the first half into this glacial slog towards an obligatory moment we already know is coming. Even with the poor marketing notwithstanding, this still feels like YA-fiction-inspired tedium to me. From the hackneyed romance, to the tropey characters and predictability — this is all far from ideal entertainment to me. At least the third act has the decency to be occasionally hilarious. Some of the principal cast is actually really trying here, which is to be commended. Other than that, though, I really, really cannot recommend a watch.

This was one of the worst movies I've been to. For people who are fans of horror/thrillers, you're going to be grossly disappointed. For about 75 mins out of this 106 min film -- nothing happens. ZERO. It plays like a stupid drama you would see on the Peacock Network. The action and thrills which are cliche - again, only happen the last 20 mins of the movie. Skip this one at the theatre, VOD and change the channel even if it's free.

Reminds me of Ready or Not that came out in 2021. Good film

One of the most boring movies in recent memory. Wooden characters, ridiculous dialogue and terrible terrible pacing.

Easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Lots of set up with no payoff, awful pacing, terrible dialogue. Awfully shot with no scares, trite tropes, and some brutally cringey moments in the third act.
