As much as “DTF St. Louis” suggests that loneliness and the absence of healthy, rewarding male friendships are a pox on American men, the show likewise critiques paths that lead them to damnation: social media apps that crater one’s confidence with arguably greater efficacy than fulfilling the “social” part of the label.
Everyone here has an odd, difficult part – especially once the whimsy has worn off – and making them congruent as well as believable individually is an achievement all of its own. You may well find yourself DTFinishing the whole thing in a single watch.
Those who want to scratch their “White Lotus” itch without the mouth-watering scenery should be “DTW” (that is, Down to Watch).
“DTF” is a funny, lurid and creepingly compassionate watch.
“DTF St. Louis” breaks down its crude acronym until it isn’t disagreeable anymore. At times, it’s downright aspirational. Perhaps best of all, it’s also very, very funny.
HBO only sent four of seven episodes for review, but if it sticks the landing — and it probably will — it will be one of the best shows of the year.
While it never succumbs to the bloat so common in the genre, there are times when the pace feels designed more for stretching out to a season than it should, but they’re just far enough apart to never completely derail momentum.
This is a very assured show, the kind where a left-field backstory or character trait doesn’t come off like a tacked-on quirk or distraction but rather the heart of what makes it so wonderful to watch in the first place.
For a show that’s routinely funny and intriguing, DTF St. Louis is startlingly insightful and moving.
It won’t be for everyone, but if you enjoy shows like FX’s Fargo and HBO’s own The Chair Company, it’s worth getting down with DTF.
Giant waste of time. A murder mystery that isnt a mystery. A show with a great start, great acting and absolutely dull resolution. Seems the show runner wanted to pull a gotcha so badly he didn’t really care if the entire series was a waste of time. Every single character is unlikable. The detectives are not fleshed out enough as people. And the overall ending that this main character who has issues but nothing major enough to kill himself just…does. Feels incredibly lazy. They had a great premise and went absolutely no where with it. Every episode ended on a great cliff hanger with a new juicy detail Inching you closer to the murder mystery. Only for the finale to say “sike there is no murder mystery, this guy was just depressed and killed himself”. What a waste of time and good actors.
Uma das coisas que mais gostei dessa série foi a construção dos personagens, um estudo aprofundado de personalidade, o que demonstra certo acuro com o material. Por mais que não seja difícil desvendar o mistério, e a série após a metade fique um pouco arrastada, é convincente do início ao fim, sem reviravoltas mirabolantes, o que garante a conexão do espectador.

This is one of those shows where I'm just angry I watched the whole thing. Was looking for a payoff but it never came. The mystery is nothing but a poorly constructed shaggy dog story. It was easy to figure it out only because the writers were working SO hard to convince us something else. What a mess. The writing in this movie - the plot, the dialogue is just a mess. I can't imagine the creators had any real idea what they were trying to say when they started, and then someone told them to stretch it out to 7 episodes :( Possibly, maybe... if it was a 1.5 hour movie the murder mystery would have been worth watching, but still probably not. I really don't know what more to say - I'd go into the story but I still can't really comprehend what it was? I can't even tell you if the acting was any good because we have no idea who these characters were supposed to be.
This show continues to surprise me in all the right ways. The humor is there, the pathos for the characters but it's in the subtle ways - the peculiar but effective dialogue ( No way Jose!) the acting genius of Bateman, well hell - the entire production is so unique. This show has given me faith in the return of excellent TV.

It’s a bizarre storyline. I do wonder if David Harbour taking on this role was some sort of redemption for what transpired between him and Lily Allen. Nevertheless, by the 5th episode and the obligatory introduction of another person of color, I’m convinced this show doesn’t know what it wants to be or how to get there.
