The third season of “Hacks” is funny, unpredictable, and even moving. It’s a show that almost deliberately avoids the traps of its premise, walking up to clichés about age and gender in Hollywood—even cancel culture in a brilliant late-season episode—and then taking a sharp turn away from them.
Taking Deborah and Ava on a road trip is a good way to keep things moving and mix it up. Hacks remains magnificent, confident comedy.

The writing is funnier and more poignant, the ensemble has gelled and the tonal jaggedness that plagued the previous season has been smoothed out. With Smart never better, the first six episodes (of eight total) find the show firing on all cylinders. It’s exactly what you’d hope from any sophomore season.
The sharp HBO Max comedy isn’t content to coast. The new season, for anyone concerned that it wouldn’t live up to the first, aims higher and deeper, expanding the dynamic between Ava and Deborah while keeping both the wit and pathos largely intact. ... While “Hacks” will definitely be in the hunt for more Emmys (it won for Smart and its writing and directing), look for Metcalf to join their ranks. The second season’s third episode is about as good as these things get.
It rightfully nabbed three Emmys last year. But much like Smart’s Deborah Vance, Hacks is upping its game with its second go-round.
Overall, Hacks Season 2 is a higher-stakes, higher-reward season, emotionally. The journey of pairing such generationally divided comedians together, first launched in Season 1, is now given even more interesting obstacles to navigate.
The pacing is exquisite, with every episode revealing just enough of Deb and Ava’s backstory to cast them repeatedly in a new light. So there it is: Hacks is every bit as great as you’ve been told.

season 4 has been a series of fart jokes and desperate scripting -- JeanSmart deserves much, much better. The plotting is wildly unfocused, and the screaming by most characters is shrill and rarely funny. Please transfer the Kayla character to any other programme, so boring and predictable is she - and while she's transitioning, speech classes would be very useful. I know my response is a minority opinion, but maybe season 5 will find firmer footing and get past the pointless, predictable feuding between the two principals.

We were huge fans from the beginning - especially from the beginning - because there was a striving intention to be seen and heard by the primary characters portrayed by Smart and Einbinder. Lots of intelligent, edgy, dark, silly comedy emerged from that dynamic. Now that they've "made it" they're just bickering at each other. The series seems to have lost its way (this is based on Episode 1 in Season **** this takes a believable/watchable turn, I'm back in!)
Hollywood needs to stop thinking that their farts smell like roses, and this show is a prime example of that. Completely overrated. Jean Smart is no standup comedian. I'm sorry but she's not and giving her all the trophies in the world is never going to convince me that she is anything but what the title of the shoe states - a true hack. Joan Rivers is rolling over in her grave because they stole her legacy for this mediocre at best series. And that little girl costar is nepotism at it's worst. Her mom was a terrible comic and now so is her daughter. A few laughs here and there, but mostly this show is only good for playing in the background while you are busy doing other things.

"Hacks" (S03, 9-eps, 32+ mins, MAX) This series, starring Jean Smart, continues to shine among so much streaming dross out there. "Deborah Vance" and her on-again-off-again assistant and head-writer "Ava Daniels" have such an entertaining, co-dependent relationship that it's just always fun from situation to situation. The series writing is funny, intriguing, and plausible. It's just so good in all the important dimensions. And at the season's finale, "Ava" finally makes a really important step in her growth, and that would be a good launch into a season four, if we're fortunate enough to get that green-lit, let's really hope so.
This show is so brilliant in so many levels that I'm not even able to talk about it. -- after finale edit (even though i'm still not able to talk about it but that's on me): never seen a comedy show this brilliantly made. just jokes nonstop man god who wrote these jokes one killer after another. such a funny show im laughing actually loud. great story great writing actually I could have given another 10 if the story wasn't this great either. always good vibes. the relationship always felt real and their clash exciting to watch. this season was especially beautiful to the eyes, amazing shots, but that could just be my new tv. no not really the finale was something else. all characters are so good and exciting to watch, funny dialogues. great on all aspects that tv medium can exhibit. the finale moved me and i don't even normally say that. best funny thing that roamed through american media since 2010.

Brilliant chemistry between a refreshingly new television pairing. Smart and Einbinder are just brilliant together and elevate some of the more familiar material at the beginning and then really shine once the show catches up to them. A hoot!
I'm 40 minutes in and I'm yet to find anything I like. For a show about comedians and comedy writers, it's not very funny. The fat receptionist comic relief character who is stupid beyond believability is a typical Hollywood clown shouting, "look at me, I'm funny!" I get the impression I'm supposed to be impressed by the old woman? She's super rich. She's a **** She lives a vacuous, shallow, lonely existence. She takes what she has (which is nothing without someone to share it with) for granted. I don't like the young woman either. Both of them are products of a corrupt, disgustingly wealthy, morally bankrupt, egotistical world called Hollywood. Film-makers used to try and tell the greatest stories in the world. Now they just turn the camera around and point it back into their soulless lives. This show is about a writer and a comedian, but the writing **** and it isn't funny. I'm sure it gets better, but 40 minutes is too long to wait for a reason to stick around. I don't want to watch 5 hours for 15 minutes of gold. This gets "universal acclaim"?
