The characters are cutouts, and the primordial predators aren’t remotely frightening because the CGI budget isn’t high enough. It’s not a good show, but perhaps it’s not trying to be – this is popcorn entertainment that will keep you reasonably amused as it barrels along in its own silly way.
It’s tremendously, gloriously, educationally bad.
There’s enough to like about La Brea that will keep viewers watching, despite the show’s more silly and cheesy elements, especially the mystery of where the “lost” Angelenos are and why they’re there.
One of the characters says it seems like they’re in an episode of “Lost,” and unfortunately, “La Brea” is the latest TV show to borrow from the “Lost” playbook.
If “La Brea” [flies off the rails like CBS' Zoo], it just might find a loyal audience of people willing to go with it to the ends of the bizarro earth and back. If it remains determined to take itself very seriously, though, the bland procedural lurking underneath just might swallow it up.
While the pilot doesn’t have the immediate adrenalin rush of the first “Lost” (almost nothing on TV does), it does set up just enough to keep viewers engaged. ... There’s also the sad news to report that “La Brea” doesn’t look very good. Now, the cheap effects could be improved by the budget that usually balloons from pilot to second episode, but “La Brea” needs to lean into its insane concept to work.
As great as the series is at raising new questions, however, it’s not at all clear how good it’ll be at answering them. ... La Brea feels too middle-of-the-road to make much impression at all.
The shark-jumping occurred in Happy Days' fifth season. But a critic who waits five years to declare a shark jumped these days probably won't have a show left to declare dead; three and a half seasons is now considered a healthy lifespan for a TV series. So let's give mad props to NBC's La Brea, which vaults the Selachimorpha in precisely nine minutes when it debuts next week.

I have to say I have seen bad acting in other shows but the acting in this is absolutely horrendous not only that the story lines are ridiculous the people the prehistoric tribes in 10,000 BC wearing leather clothes and Boots there weren't even any cows back then so how did they make leather and I get it it's a fantasy but can you at least make it a little more realistic I mean the survivors are incredibly clean and the blonde woman's hair is always so nicely curled and styled I mean come on ridiculous is a mild word
I am not actively watching the show, however the dialogue is so bad I experienced collateral damage due to being within earshot. The writers have mastered "Tell don't show" as every single line is the most generic sentence that could be constructed for necessary plot progression. "Hello misunderstood character, I know all the other characters misunderstand you, but I believe you are a good person because I know something the other's don't" " [anxious delivery] misunderstood character, here is my vague excuse to avoid teaming up with you, because you might be bad" "I know what you think of me, but other people misunderstand you too, but I have useful knowledge that can help you, and hopefully gain your trust. Afterall, you too are stereotyped negatively by all the other characters, take a chance on me" The above sentences closely mirror the structure of the writing without actually spoiling what the characters say. Of course little work must be done to transform those generic templates into a script. There is also a scene where characters are trying to stealthily sneak into an area and they loudly narrate to each other reminders to be quiet and not get caught. I cannot speak on the acting, as I am unsure if any skilled actor could even do justice to the lines they were given. But whether by causation or correlation, dialogue to acting, all relationships and conversations feel stiff. I truly regret being in the vicinity of someone who enjoys the show. I have begged this person to stop watching it, however due to it's extremely on the nose and descriptive writing, it is the perfect show for a certain kind of audience to scroll tik tok with while having a second source of stimulation in the background.

This makes a proper understanding of script and character development essential to the success of any production in the genre.“La Brea” wastes its exciting premise on horrible dialogue, excessive characters, and a slow development expressed in hours of unnecessary subplot due to writer incompetence. Some of the rules of proper screenwriting include never stating the obvious and never explaining thru dialogue what can be related thru performance (let the audience live the experience thru the visual medium). Character dialogue should be rooted in conflict and the script should always advance the plot. “La Brea” makes all the uneducated mistakes in film production and more, severely cheapening the experience, and squandering a great deal of audience interest and **** you’re enjoying this series, then that’s a good thing. Please, continue to appreciate it. My aim, here, is to enlighten you in regards to the filmmaking process and its aspects. This show had every opportunity to offer a profound message of separation, vulnerability, friendship, adventure, nature… the scope of themes it could address are endless! Unfortunately, “La Brea” only glosses over these very human issues instead of developing them, resulting in a poorly conceived daytime Soap. The best way to vie for television with deeper meaning and more effort is to refuse to pay for a mediocre product and to not watch the release on streaming (because viewership is carefully tracked). If you’re willing to make this small sacrifice, you’ll be helping force the film industry to deliver a better product.
Good concept. That's where it ends. The script is aimed at 12 year olds or people with a 12/13 year old mentality. Very much the formula of a teenage soapie but adults are meant to watch it. Excruciatingly painfull once you get past the opening scene.
Melodrama sinkhole from the opening scene, talking about unloading all the tropes with the biggest dump truck all at once. I watched about 1/3 of the pilot and moved to e9 because I knew where this was going; and let me tell you it got even more ridiculous Woke/SJW combined with bad acting and angry females (as if you have to angry to be taken seriously). Skip this nonsense for some other nonsense. This recycled garbage getting very old now, nothing new to see here.
Ist ein bisschen Trash aber lustig. Ich finde nicht das CGI Grotten sondern dass die Überlebenden nach Wochen in der Wildnis und Arbeit in Mienen saubere Fingernägel,frisch gewaschene Haare und Fleckenlosen Kleidung haben. Da war mal ein echt schlechter Kostümheini am arbeiten.
Little different but very similar to the Terra Nova show released in 2011. Unlike Terra Nova, this show will get a conclusion to the series with a short season 3 to close the book on the show. Enjoyed parts of La Brea but the acting is cringe at times. However, it kept me hooked enough to want to finish the show to its completion.
scott was the best character in the show. i wish every other character didnt get home. especially the harris family. overall i will give this show an 7/10. and we never got to see what happened to the wolf puppy! did he die? tell me now
This show is just awful. What I find most disturbing is the acting. They are all like a bunch of robots. No emotion, no feeling, just say your line. Only one actor, in my view, was adequate, the stoned dude managed to say his lines with the appropriate emotion. Can't image it lasting another season-one was to many.

Not nearly as bad as most reviews would suggest, however this show can easily be picked apart if you try to. There is a decent sci-fi disaster plot, though if it doesn't progress and give viewers some answers over time I can see how it might lose what little audience it has.
Stop trying to make political statements people are sick of it. Find a better term of endearment than sweetie, nobody says that.
The best description for this poorly written, poorly acted show is that it is 2021 version of one of those schlocky sci-fi movies of the fifties. The only way to enjoy it is to watch it and be entertained by the bad dialogue and horrible special effects.
La Brea is a TV series of the disaster and science fiction genres. The series has 3 good actors: Zyra Gorecki as Izzy Harris, the daughter of Eve Harris. A lot of people may consider her the star of the series. Natalie Zea as Eve Harris, the mother of Izzy Harris. Eoin Macken as Gavin Harris, the husband of Eve Harris The other actors range from professional to below average The writing is sometimes not bad - but, at too many other times is not good. David Appelbaum wrote episode 1. He did not do a good job. This is not just me. I think most knowledgeable viewers know he did not write a good script. I'll continue to watch the series. I think it has potential. People with an interest in prehistory in the circa 10,000 BC era might be drawn to the series. It will be interesting to see how scientifically accurate the series is in reproducing that era.
Get some advisors over 50 years old. Saber tooth tigers did not have canines small as straws. Mammoths did not live in forests. Make it more about people than about dangers. So far it looks like a video game. If it's always hyper, you will lose your adult audience. Remember cell phones are useless without recharging. Leaving food out on the ground is just asking for critters to take it all. Use some old hippies who know how to make soap and candles from scratch. Weave baskets, make arrows etc, start someone on making clay pots to cook in and store fats in and other things. If you have excitement all the time, no one will stay with the show. Characters are much more intriguing. Basic American Indian culture included people who listened to plants to know what would work as medicine. I get the space/time rift, but as this takes place in present day america, lots of people will know about that "light" in the sky. Do NOT make the whole program about deadly dangers. Make it about people and you have a good start on that level. NCIS is popular because we are attached to character development, not the bad vs good. Other cop show just don't do that. They concentrate too much on speed and violence. Enough already. Again...drop the video game mentality and make it about the people more. Your dangerous animals need to be more realistic too. And you must include a few cats and dogs who were pets who fell into the hole also.
The quickest way to turn viewers off is advertisements every 4 minutes. Special effects were lackluster. Go get the special effects crew from 10,000 BC. Now you're cooking.
Poor acting. I’ve seen better acting in a high school play. Admittedly, not much to work with Animated prehistoric wolves and birds that looked completely cartoonish, like something out of a 1960 movie. Cheaply done nonsense. I can’t believe that this trash will make it through even one season. Maybe if I was 12 years old I’d enjoy it. Who knows?
