Spartacus (2010)

Spartacus develops into an enjoyably soapy escape--a la the similarly sweaty and sex-drenched "True Blood"--as its first season progresses.

Given that Spartacus does not stumble in what it sets out to do, one's objections to the show, if objections one has, will be moral, or simple matters of taste, to the extent that those two concerns can actually be separated.

After artistic duds like the TV version of "Crash," Starz may have found its destination series in Spartacus. This might prove to be the not-at-all-guilty pleasure of the season.

There's no denying that stylized decapitations are entertaining, especially when accompanied by a generous helping of soft porn.

Eventually, the series makes way for just enough plot to give our poor, overstimulated eyes a rest. There's a bit of political maneuvering, fierce rivalries, the examination of slavery vs. free will, ludus-yard hazing and even romance.

It is trashy fun as Spartacus, who is not really that interested in overthrowing oppressive Roman rule right now as he is in getting his sexed-up wife back, fights his way up gladiator rankings and out.

It's no "Rome," but at least it appears headed more in that direction.

Spartacus fetishizes violence even more than it depicts sex and nudity, which is often. There’s a whole lot of B.C. banging going on here.

The result is compulsively watchable pulp, provided you have a high threshold for decapitations and copulations, sometimes simultaneous.

It's deliciously, marvelously bad, and I was helpless in its grip. It's a long way from Kubrick, but what isn't?

Score: 6.7 One of the first TV Series i watched online without being something my parents showed me. It was honestly awsome, i remember the main actor died in the middle of it? something like that, it was kinda weird afterwards but overrall it was very egnaging

I'm a big fan of Roman era movies so the subject matter is not the problem. This is an appallingly bad series. I bought the entire series but have never made it past the 2nd disc. They apparently thought that gratuitous nudity (nonstop **** and ****) and blood gushing gore would make up for the single note plot, boringly obvious storyline, atrocious acting and scriptwriting which was seemingly targeting 12 yr Olds with low IQ. Endless hours of exactly the same thing. I'm a warrior slave, your a Roman, I hate you so we'll stab each other, after which I'll go to the orgy, get drunk, wake up tomorrow and repeat, and repeat, and repeat. Over and Neverending. The practically non existent character development is so bad you don't care what happens to anyone because they're just wooden overbaked caricatures of people, rather than actual people. If mindless, nonstop nudity, sex, and extreme violence is your thing, this is your movie. If your hoping for anything resembling historical Rome, and the lives of the people who lived there, your out of luck.

The show knows who it's targeting and is really good at delivering to them. It's a show for men. It's violence, blood and boobs. And you know the craziest part? It included stories that most men won't really be into, there was a gay relationships as part of the main plot and there's a lot of dongs on display throughout the series. Ironically this show back in 2010 aimed at men was really inclusive.

It's a very good show, one of the best when it's about gladiators. I recommend!

Very bad. The graphic effects are terrible. The acting is overdramatic. I couldn't complete season 1.

In season one of this series, we are not faced with good special effects. But we are facing a new world. A special world, a sensitive and strong world. Whenever I think of blood and sand, my hair stands on end. If we had seen Andy Whitfield's acting in the next seasons, I can boldly say that this series would be a masterpiece. My favorite show of all time. A very large "300" clone movie got cancelled and this show got the crew. That's why the production value is higher than it should be. I didn't like the first episode but after the whole season it can easily be forgiven. This show is so good it's fun to watch it with people who haven't seen it just to see their reactions. It has everything. Action, gore, love, lust, tragedy, betrayal, brotherhood, redemption. Andy Whitfield is Spartacus and no one else.

I think this was the first TV series I ever watched from start to finish, if I recall correctly. I am a **** for history settings, and I enjoyed this series a lot. I would need to give this a re-watch for a proper score, but from what I can remember from memory I would give it a solid 8/10.

One of the best single seasons of any show is season 1 Blood and Sand. Andy Whitfield is the true Spartacus. The first 2-3 episodes may seem a little cheesy or over the top but by episode 4 you are hooked and the season only gets better by each episode with finishing in one of the most satisfying season enders in TV history. Hang in there, you won't be disappointed.

Spartacus is ridiculously underrated and absolutely one of my favorite tv shows ever! It is one of the rare shows where each season is just as incredible as the others, all 4 seasons are fantastic & some of the best tv I've ever seen! I've watched the entire series 3 times already. After the original actor (Andrew Whitfield) who played Spartacus sadly died of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma after Season 1, they had to recast it and the actor who replaced him (Liam McIntyre) as Spartacus was just as terrific! Do yourself a favor and watch this incredible series **** will not be disappointed! It really is the perfect show!

The first few episodes are rough. But the show gets continuously better over time, and ends in a great finale. The entirety of it is a little too gratuitous in its violence (particularly the blood effects) to take totally seriously, but you do end up caring for the characters, which are portrayed excellently. They have a believable physicality of gladiators, but also act as real human beings who react realistically to the things happening around them. Of course the standout is Andy Whitfield as Spartacus, who’s thoroughly fantastic the entire length of the season, and who I’m genuinely going to miss watching the others. The writing is a bit melodramatic at points, but more often than not gets the point across in entertaining or emotionally affecting ways, and the storyline is really good. Everything is set up well, and the payoff to literally everything is just as good. If I’d have to give any criticism it’s obviously to the first few episodes but I’d say the main thing I had an issue with is a lack of location variety. I think I can count on my hands the amount of places they go not including the different rooms of the lutus. Not an egregious issue but one I’d like to see change. Excited for the next season.

One of the best shows ever. Beneath the sex and violence is a show with twists and plots that lead to an absolute emotional rollercoaster. Don't miss this one.

The first season Blood and Sand was my favourite season of Spartacus. The writing in this show is amazing. Unlike Game of Thrones they actually set up storylines and pay them off. The attention to detail, story, action, sex and violence is matched by no other show or movie. It might turn some people off but it's a great show. It has more heart than most. You cant help but to love every character good and bad. The acting is excellent. Andy Whitfield as Spartacus was so good. One of my favourite characters of all time. R.I.P Andy.

Imagine Game of Thrones without the production and writing and you have the sex crazed, violence-prone Spartacus.
