Velma is great. It’s fast-paced and ridiculous, without being arrogant about how quick its wits are. What’s more: It’s got a knack for poking fun at itself and the Scooby-Doo franchise’s history, sprinkling little Easter eggs about for devoted fans to pick up and admire.
Velma is an often funny take on the classic Scooby-Doo series with plenty of risqué humor. But it’s unfortunate that most of what makes Velma funny is completely unrelated to the character who gets a starring role.
“Velma” is doing a lot — possibly too much — but there are emotional beats and comedic gags that do land amid a saturated creative canvas, including arcs for the future Mysteries, Inc gang that combine existing backstory with eclectic “Velma” flourishes (a big Fred twist leads to some truly outrageous scenes in later episodes).
With a “zoinks” here and a “jeepers” there, “Velma” looks out for the grownups and crafts something new and, yes, groovy from the familiar. It also sets a template for retooling other aging properties to entertain everyone from Gen X to Millennials. (Looking right at you, “G.I. Joe,” "Snorks" and “Jem.”) Because what they’ve baked into these Scooby Snacks definitely needs to be shared.
Velma manages to transcend the inherent eye-rolls that come with a reboot, delivering a fresh, winkingly silly take on Mystery Inc. The show is fast-paced and ridiculous.

While the incredible animation and a talented voice cast keep things entertaining, Velma’s inconsistent tone and humor prevent it from unmasking a darn good show.
The dialogue can be racy for a show about teens, but the animation, and 40-year-olds voicing the roles, help mitigate the creepiness factor. ... Although the animated backdrops are sharper and more textured, the visuals here seem less aimed at wowing 2023 audiences than evoking the ’70s cartoon, which they do quite ably.
Velma’s suspense isn’t gripping on its own, but it doesn’t matter. The voice performances make the brief lulls worth it. The actors are clearly having a ball, with the warm chemistry between Kaling, Wu, Richardson, and Howerton shining through even though they don’t appear on screen. The supporting cast is equally charming.
The animation is bright, poppy, and fun, the cast is game, and some solid gags do emerge from what’s been seen so far. But even if it could get over its tonal issues in a second season, it’s hard to hope that it’ll have a chance to do so.
I liked the animation, voice acting, Shaggy as a character, and the part where Scrappy Doo kills Velma during the series finale. Almost everything else ****.

Scooby Doo, without Scooby Doo? They made Velma... a careful brainiac with discipline and impulse control.... a black woman? And they turned Shaggy into a black dude with a shaved head. At this point, it's obvious these TV shows are funded by the platforms that host them, to get people to use them to watch 1 episode. The original Scooby Doo works because all of these 'White' people are actually types of White people you see out in public. I've never been out at a grocery store and seen a black woman looking at the ingredients on a food item to make sure it was healthy. If an ethnic 'is Velma', then I'm the president of the moon. This show made me unsubscribe from Binge. How has it got 2 seasons and another on the way? Who cares about the race of the characters, races for fictional characters should always be interchangeable. But oh, are the show creators playing the race and pride cards, and saying the bad reviews are from bigots. It's just the writing, oh lord is the writing for this show terrible. I think the writers would be better off strapping keyboards to their feet, and trudging around their offices, and I guarantee the writing would be better, and more cohesive as a story. The only saving component is the animation, but not enough to save this trash heap.

The show's constant focus on female empowerment and victimhood feels contrived and out of place in a series that should be fun and lighthearted. The characters, particularly Velma, are reduced to one-dimensional stereotypes, their personalities overshadowed by their feminist ideologies. The show's attempts to be edgy and provocative often fall flat, resorting to shock value and offensive humor. The constant references to sexual assault and violence are not only gratuitous but also insensitive. It's clear that the creators were more concerned with pushing their political agenda than creating a compelling story. Velma is a disappointing disappointment. While the animation and voice acting are solid, the show's forced feminist narrative and lack of substance make it a painful watch. It's a missed opportunity to create a truly enjoyable and original series.
The idea of taking the Mystery Gang from their original selves, to completely different ethnicities or just entirely different characters altogether was already an awful idea, but it could've still been done well. Turns out that it wasn't done well. This show feels like it was intended for hate-watching purposes, with the main characters being UNBARABLY watchable. Velma herself constantly brings up misogyny and sexism, which is a powerful message that could elevate the show... if it wasn't used as an excuse for everything she does. If she does ANY wrong, it's all because of that dark patriarchy. Any jokes that are made immediately fall flat, and the story of the show is absolute garbage and is effectively non-sensical. The ending of the first season is so anti-climactic that it hurts even more to end the show than to endure it all the way through. There is unnecessary kissing and sexual mentions everywhere, as well as promoting the idea that you should kiss someone who is having a panic attack, being the complete opposite of what you SHOULD do. This may be the only TV show I've watched that has actively had me rooting against the main characters for being complete **** to everyone, and expecting to be treated with praise and decency in return. This show should never be watched, don't endure the same suffering that I have.
Why was this show even made? How? Who made it? These are the questions I am genuinely asking myself about this show. Imagine taking a beloved kids show, something you’ve since you were a child. Then take that show, add in a lot of needless teenage high school tropes, old cliches and spiteful hatred of every male / white characters and you still can’t fathom the absolute garbage this show is. I can’t even imagine who it was made for. And the fact that it had to go through likely dozens of writers, editors, executives. Professionals at their job and this is what came out, it makes me worried for the human race. Do not waste one second of your time on this show.

The show is actually good if you stop trying to compare it to the older scoobydoo animations All I have to say is a majority of the people saying the show is bad are apart of the older generation that grew up watching the original scooby doo and are comparing the show to those old classic cartoons and thats why they arent able to fully form an opinion or even enjoy the show. I myself, a genz born 05, too thought it would be yet another scoobydoo remake but with a focus on Velma but that turned out not to be the case. But even still I was able to put all that aside and really enjoy the show for what is is because in reality its not a scoobydoo spinoff in honesty its just a show that is loosely based on scoobydoo but targeted at old people, maybe teens+, instead of children like the older scoobydoo animations. And I know this will just get tons of down votes soley based on the fact that I enjoyed the show but please actually watch it for yourself and dont let these old people with their negative reviews change your mind about watching it.
