Dolls takes puppeteering as its overriding motif, which relates thematically to the action provided by the live characters. Chief among those tales is the story of Matsumoto and Sawako, a young couple whose relationship is about to be broken apart by the former's parents, who have insisted their son take part in an arranged marriage to his boss' daughter.

The overall mood is stately and melancholy, the selective use of color is ravishing, and some of the natural views are breathtaking.
#北野武影展2019#一点也不北野武的纯爱片，大佬谈情说爱起来一点也不含糊，从不会止步于小打小闹，温情中透着残酷，残酷中又蕴藏着诗意。形式感与仪式感兼具的“实验电影”，类似于岩井俊二早期的《爱的捆绑》，寓意是不言而喻的，爱是互相束缚，爱的彼此平等（无论身体还是精神物质），你残疾我也不甘心健全，你疯癫我也不会正常下去，深陷其中的人都无法自拔，当然爱是维系的红线亦是彼此的诅咒，常常伴随着出乎意料的死亡戏码，这一点从三段故事里的爱情全部没有好结局就可以看出来，要么被杀被撞要么就是坠落悬崖。而片头片尾采用木偶戏的表现手法，一下就消除了古今之间的距离，由此看出自古爱便是一样的，正所谓“问世间情为何物，直教人生死相许”。ps 这可能是最美的一部北野武了，片中的枫叶与雪景简直不要太好看了。
